How Decimal Time Is Converted to Hours, Minutes & Seconds

Decimal time counts in tenths and hundredths. Clock time counts in sixtieths. That mismatch is the whole reason this conversion is needed: the digits after the decimal point are a fraction of a whole unit, never a count of minutes. The conversion runs through a total in seconds, which keeps every input unit on the same footing.

The "seconds per unit" multiplier depends on what your number measures:

Worked example

Take the default value of 7.75 hours. Hours are worth 3,600 seconds each, so the total is 7.75 ร— 3,600 = 27,900 seconds. Dividing by 3,600 gives 7 whole hours with 2,700 seconds left over. Dividing that remainder by 60 gives 45 whole minutes with nothing left over. The result is 07:45:00 โ€” 7 hours 45 minutes. Note that it is not 7 hours 75 minutes: the 0.75 is three quarters of an hour, and three quarters of 60 is 45.

Durations longer than a day

Once a duration passes 24 hours the two useful ways of writing it start to differ, so the calculator shows both. Take 42.756 hours: that is 153,921.6 seconds, rounded to 153,922.
