How the Final Score You Need is Calculated
Your overall grade is a weighted blend of your current grade (everything before the final) and your final exam score.
The formula
Overall = Current × (1 − Final Weight) + Final Score × Final Weight
Rearranging for the final score you need to hit a target overall grade:
Final Score Needed = (Target − Current × (1 − Final Weight)) ÷ Final Weight
Reading the result
- Between 0% and 100%: your target is achievable — that's the score you need.
- Above 100%: not achievable even with a perfect final — the "Best Case" figure shows the highest overall grade you can still reach.
- 0% or below: already secured — your current grade guarantees the target even with a 0% on the final.
For example, with an 82% current grade, a final worth 30%, and an 85% target: Needed = (85 − 82×0.7) ÷ 0.3 = (85 − 57.4) ÷ 0.3 = 27.6 ÷ 0.3 = 92%. Enter these same figures into the calculator above to reproduce this result.

This varies enormously by course and institution — commonly anywhere from 15% to 50% of the total grade. Always use the exact weight stated in your syllabus rather than guessing, since even a small difference in weight noticeably changes the score you need.
The math is identical for any single remaining graded component — final exam, final project, or final paper — as long as you enter its correct weight toward the overall grade. The calculator doesn't care what the remaining item is called.
