How CGPA is Calculated

CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) on India's common 10-point scale is a credit-weighted average across every subject you've taken so far.

The formula

CGPA = Σ (Grade Point × Credits) ÷ Σ (Credits)

Each subject's grade point is multiplied by its credits to get "quality points". Add every subject's quality points, then divide by total credits across all subjects.

Common 10-point grade scale

Universities differ, but this is a widely used convention:

Letter GradeGrade Point
O (Outstanding)10
A+ (Excellent)9
A (Very Good)8
B+ (Good)7
B (Above Average)6
C (Average)5
P (Pass)4
F (Fail)0

Always check your own university's mark sheet for the grade point it actually assigned — enter that number directly rather than assuming this table applies.

CGPA vs SGPA

SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) is the same calculation restricted to one semester's subjects. CGPA extends it across every semester completed so far. If you already have each semester's SGPA calculated, the SGPA to CGPA Calculator aggregates those directly instead of re-entering every subject.

For example, two subjects — a 4-credit subject with grade point 9 and a 3-credit subject with grade point 7 — give (9×4 + 7×3) ÷ (4+3) = 57 ÷ 7 = 8.14 CGPA. Enter these same figures into the calculator above to reproduce this result.

Frequently Asked Questions

Add every subject you've taken (across all semesters) with its grade point (usually 0-10 in India) and credits, and this calculator computes the credit-weighted average: CGPA = Σ(Grade Point × Credits) ÷ Σ(Credits). This gives your overall CGPA directly from raw subject data, rather than aggregating pre-computed semester SGPAs.

Most Indian universities use a 10-point scale, commonly O=10, A+=9, A=8, B+=7, B=6, C=5, P=4, F=0, though the exact letter-to-point mapping varies by university (VTU, AKTU, Anna University and others each define their own). Enter the grade point your university's mark sheet actually shows for each subject, not just the letter grade, for an accurate result.

This calculator computes CGPA directly from every individual subject's grade point and credits — useful if you have your full mark sheet in front of you. The SGPA to CGPA Calculator instead aggregates SGPA values you've already calculated for each semester, which is faster if you already know each semester's SGPA and just need to combine them.

No — CGPA is credit-weighted, so a 4-credit subject affects your CGPA twice as much as a 2-credit subject with the same grade point. This is why simply averaging grade points without considering credits gives an incorrect CGPA.

Yes — enter your confirmed subjects and grade points from completed semesters, then add hypothetical grade points for an upcoming semester's subjects to see a projected CGPA. Replace the hypothetical values with actual grade points once results are declared.

Use the dedicated CGPA to Percentage Calculator, which applies the standard ×9.5 convention (or your university's specific multiplier) to your final CGPA figure from this calculator.
