How SGPA is Calculated

SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) measures your performance in one semester only, using the same credit-weighting logic as CGPA but restricted to that term's subjects.

The formula

SGPA = Σ (Grade Point × Credits) ÷ Σ (Credits)

Multiply each subject's grade point by its credits, sum across every subject in the semester, then divide by that semester's total credits.

Think of SGPA as one data point and CGPA as the running average across every SGPA so far (itself credit-weighted by each semester's total credits). A semester with unusually low or high credits will pull less or more heavily on your CGPA — this calculator handles the single-semester math, while the SGPA to CGPA Calculator combines multiple semesters together.

A note on backlogs

How a backlog (failed and re-attempted) subject's grade point is counted — in the original semester or the one it was cleared in — varies by university policy. Confirm your specific institution's rule before relying on this for an official record, and enter the subject in whichever semester your university's regulations assign it to.

For example, four subjects with grade points 9, 8, 7 and 6, each worth 4 credits, give SGPA = (9+8+7+6)×4 ÷ (4×4) = 120 ÷ 16 = 7.50. Enter these same figures into the calculator above to reproduce this result.

SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) is the credit-weighted average of grade points for only the subjects taken in one semester: SGPA = Σ(Grade Point × Credits) ÷ Σ(Credits) for that semester's subjects only.

SGPA covers one semester's subjects only. CGPA covers every semester completed so far, and is itself usually a credit-weighted average of each semester's SGPA. A strong SGPA this term raises your CGPA; a weak one pulls it down, with the effect size depending on how many total credits that semester represents relative to your whole program.

SGPA reflects the actual grade points earned, not just a pass/fail outcome — scraping a Pass (grade point 4) in several subjects produces a much lower SGPA than solid B or A grades, even though every subject technically cleared.
