How to Combine SGPA into CGPA

If you already have each semester's SGPA calculated (from a mark sheet or the SGPA Calculator), you don't need to re-enter every subject — just combine the semester-level figures directly.

The formula

CGPA = Σ (SGPA × Semester Credits) ÷ Σ (Semester Credits)

Each semester's SGPA is weighted by that semester's total credits, then everything is summed and divided by total credits across all semesters — the same credit-weighting principle used inside SGPA and CGPA calculations, just applied one level up.

Why not a simple average?

A plain average of SGPA values only equals the correct CGPA if every semester has identical total credits. Many programs have at least one semester with a different credit load (a lighter final semester for a project, or a heavier semester with extra lab credits), so weighting by actual credits avoids a systematically wrong result.

For example, three semesters with SGPA 8.5, 7.8 and 8.2, each carrying 24 credits, give CGPA = (8.5+7.8+8.2)×24 ÷ (24×3) = 590.4 ÷ 72 = 8.20. Since all three credit totals are equal here, this also matches the simple average — enter these same figures into the calculator above to reproduce this result.

Frequently Asked Questions

Add each completed semester's SGPA along with that semester's total credits, and this calculator computes the credit-weighted average across all of them: CGPA = Σ(SGPA × Semester Credits) ÷ Σ(Semester Credits).

Only if every semester carries the same total credits, which is common but not guaranteed — some programs have a lighter final semester (e.g. for a project or internship) with fewer credits. Weighting by credits gives the mathematically correct CGPA in every case, so this calculator always weights, even when the numbers happen to be equal.

Use the exact total credits from your mark sheet or curriculum structure where possible — an estimate can shift the weighted average, especially if semesters have noticeably different credit loads. If every semester in your program carries identical credits, an estimate has no effect either way.

Convert that semester's percentage back to an equivalent SGPA first (commonly percentage ÷ 9.5 under the standard convention) using the Percentage to CGPA Calculator, then enter the resulting figure here alongside that semester's credits.

This calculator only needs each semester's final SGPA and credit total, so however your university's policy folds a backlog subject into that semester's SGPA, the aggregation into CGPA works the same way — the backlog handling itself happens before you get to this step.
