How Marks Needed is Calculated

Many Indian school and university exams split marks into internal (assignments, tests, attendance) and external (the final/semester exam) components. This calculator works out the raw marks you need on the external component to hit an overall percentage target.

The formula

Marks Needed = (Target % ÷ 100 × Total Maximum) − Internal Marks Obtained

Total Maximum is your internal maximum plus the external exam's maximum. The result is shown both as raw marks and as a percentage of the external exam's own maximum, since exams are usually discussed in whichever form matches how your university states its pass criteria.

Reading the result

Don't forget exam-specific pass marks

Many universities also require a separate minimum pass percentage in the external exam itself (often around 40%), independent of the overall percentage target. Hitting the overall target calculated here doesn't automatically mean you've cleared that separate exam-only minimum — check both.

For example, with 24/30 internal marks, a 70-mark external exam, and a 60% overall target: Total Maximum = 100, Needed = (0.60×100) − 24 = 60 − 24 = 36 marks out of 70 (about 51.4%). Enter these same figures into the calculator above to reproduce this result.

Frequently Asked Questions

Needed External Marks = (Target % ÷ 100 × Total Maximum Marks) − Internal Marks Obtained. Total Maximum Marks is your internal maximum plus your external/final exam maximum. This gives the raw marks you need on the exam, which the calculator also shows as a percentage of the exam's own maximum.

This calculator is built around the India-style internal/external exam split with raw marks (e.g. 30 internal + 70 external = 100 total), which is how most Indian school and university exams are structured. The Final Grade Calculator instead works with percentage-based current grade and a final exam weight, matching how Western/US-style weighted-category grading is usually described.

That means your target percentage isn't achievable even with full marks in the external exam, given your internal marks so far. The calculator flags this and shows the highest overall percentage you could still reach with a perfect exam score.

Many Indian universities require a separate minimum pass mark in the external/final exam itself (commonly around 40%), in addition to an overall percentage requirement — passing overall doesn't automatically mean you've cleared the exam-specific minimum. Check your specific university's rule and make sure the marks this calculator shows also clear that separate exam-only minimum.

It works for either, as long as the internal and external maximum marks you enter correctly represent the same scope — either one subject's internal/external split, or your semester's total internal marks and total external marks added across all subjects.
