How a JVVNL Domestic Bill is Calculated
JVVNL — Jaipur Vidyut Vitran Nigam Limited, Rajasthan's main electricity distribution company — bills domestic (LT-1) consumers using several separate charges. Each charge is worked out on a different count of units, not always the same one.
Why three different unit counts?
If you have rooftop solar, your bill actually tracks three separate figures. Each one exists for a different reason:
| Charge | Calculated on | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Energy, Fixed & Surcharge | Import − Export | This is your net purchase from the grid after netting off solar you sent back — it reflects what you actually owe under net metering. |
| Electricity Duty | Import + Self-Consumption | Duty is a state tax on total electricity used at your home, whether it came from the grid or from solar you generated and used yourself. |
| Water Conservation Cess & Urban Cess | Import only | These cesses are tied to power actually drawn through the distribution grid — self-generated solar you use directly isn't taxed under them. |

These are the slab-wise energy rates and fixed charges this calculator uses by default.
| Energy slab | Rate |
|---|---|

| 51 – 150 units | ₹6.00/unit |
| 151 – 500 units | ₹7.00/unit |
| Above 500 units | ₹7.50/unit |
| Monthly slab | Fixed charge |
|---|---|
| GD-1 (≤150 units) | ₹150 |
| GD-2 (≤300 units) | ₹300 |
| GD-3 (≤500 units) | ₹500 |
| GD-4 (>500 units) | ₹800 |
How to calculate your bill, step by step
- Find your bi-directional meter readings on your latest JVVNL bill (look for "Current Recorded Bi-Directional Meter Details" or "Solar Generator Meter Details").
- Enter your Total Import — the units you drew from the grid.
- Enter your Total Export and Solar Self-Consumption if you have rooftop solar — otherwise leave both at 0.
- Check the rates under "Advanced" match your latest bill, and adjust if JVVNL has revised them.
- The calculator applies the correct GD slab automatically and shows your estimated total, with a full breakdown below.
No solar? Here's what changes
Without solar, Import, Export and Self-Consumption all collapse to the same number — so just enter your total units in "Total Import" and leave the other two fields at 0.
What this estimate leaves out
- Regulatory Surcharge is the flat rate set by the RERC tariff order; the fuel surcharge component varies month to month and defaults to ₹0 — enter it from your latest bill for an exact figure.
- Electricity Duty, Water Conservation Cess and Urban Cess rates are set by other government orders (not the RERC tariff) — edit them under "Advanced" if your bill shows different figures.
- Meter/security deposits, Time-of-Day surcharge/rebate, voltage rebate and prior arrears are not included in this estimate.
